A woman who claimed she was writing a text message when she struck another vehicle head-on has been charged with drunken driving.
26 year-old Margaret A. Towne, of Braintree, has been charged with drunken driving, driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident. According to Braintree Deputy Police Chief Russell Jenkins, the crash occurred early Saturday morning on Forbes Road when Towne’s Mitsubishi SUV struck a Honda Accord being driven by a 20 year-old woman with a 21-year-old male passenger.
Towne swerved into the wrong lane of travel, and the driver of the Honda was unable to avoid the car. Jenkins said that after the collision “Towne allegedly asked if the couple was OK but fled on foot when the man asked if she was drunk. The man gave chase and caught up with Towne a short distance away, where Patrol Officer William Cushing Jr. joined them.”
Towne told Cushing it was texting not drinking that caused the accident. After failing several sobriety tests Towne was charged with DUI.
