Travel Safely for the Holidays
It’s the time of year for festive gatherings and family travel. However, it is also one of the worst times of the year for traffic accidents. During the period from Christmas through New Year’s Day, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports a 34% rise in traffic accident fatalities involving drunk drivers. More than 2,500 people are killed each year because of intoxicated drivers over the holidays.
Throughout the year, about 36 individuals are killed every day in motor vehicle crashes that involve an impaired driver. That number increases to 45 people each day in the three days surrounding Christmas and the number jumps to 54 people each day over the New Year’s holiday.
You can do your part this season to not become statistic. If you are traveling to holiday gatherings hosted by your family and friends, take a moment to plan your transportation and you could save a life.
- Plan public transportation ahead of time.
- Input a local cab phone number in your phone to make calling for a ride that much easier.
- Download a ride app like Uber to easily call for a ride home.
- Designate a sober driver to get you home safely.
- Plan to stay over at your destination.
- Walk home.
If you do choose to walk, be careful. More pedestrian deaths occur on New Year’s Day than any other day of the year, including Halloween.
