South Carolina Ranks Worst in Elder Protection
According to a study issued by Wallethub, South Carolina ranks worsts in elder abuse protections. The study rated states on variety of factors to measure the level of elder-abuse all over the nation. The state had the highest levels under:
- Complaints of abuse
- Neglect and exploitation amidst residents 65 and older
- Funds spent on elder abuse protection
- Accessible resources to elder-care organizations
- Quality nursing homes
The study has a negative response from public officials, who question the validity of the results. Dale Watson, ombudsman for the Office on Aging, stated that the study simply reflects the elderly residents in South Carolina are strongly supported to report their complaints. That implies that residents in other states aren’t encouraged to do the same.
The fact is that most elder abuse cases go unreported. If the other states reported more of the incidents, then maybe the state would hold a lower ranking. But, that doesn’t convey that ranking worst in the nation isn’t a major concern.
Adults over the age of 65 will cover more than one fifth of the nation’s overall population within the next decade. More and more seniors are relocating to South Carolina to retire and to enjoy the warm climate at a low tax rate. Elder home complaints are expected to rise as the state is heavily marketing to attract retiring baby-boomers.
