Red Sox pitcher discusses medical mistake
Bobby Jenks, pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, recently talked for the first time about a life-threatening medical mistake that happened to him last December.
He underwent surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital to remove two of four bone spurs on his spine. When he went home to Phoenix after the operation, he noticed fluid leaking out of the incision. A doctor told him he would need immediate surgery because it was spinal fluid coming out of his incision.
After his second surgery, Jenks discovered that the doctors had removed two of the bone spurs and started on the third, but did not finish. The third bone spur was serrated, which allowed spinal fluid to escape and cause an infection. If the infection spread to his brain, it could have been fatal.
