Pedestrian deaths rise in South Carolina
Pedestrian deaths in South Carolina are up 24% from this time last year. So far 101 people have died in pedestrian-car related accidents compared to 81 at this time in 2010.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says that the top three factors in pedestrian fatalities include drunk pedestrians, people walking with their back to traffic, and pedestrians wearing dark clothing since most accidents occur at night. During the holiday season, officers will have zero tolerance for driver violations that contribute to pedestrian fatalities, such as speeding and drunk driving.
Drivers can help lower pedestrian fatalities by avoiding using their phones in the car, driving slower, and being especially alert when making right turns.
