Driver Error Caused Tesla Autopilot Crash
In 2016, a Florida man was killed when his car crashed into a tractor trailer while he was using the Tesla Autopilot system. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into the accident and recently released their findings.
The investigators found that although the driver and the Autopilot system both failed to see the semi-truck and react to stop the crash, the driver likely had seven seconds in which to notice the truck pulling into the roadway and react to save his own life.
These findings highlight one of the most troubling aspects of the rise in automated features in cars—an increase in driver reliance on automation that leads to distracted driving. Distracted drivers cannot react quickly to hazards and situations that arise on the roadways and are likely to cause more accidents and needless injury and death.
