The recommended maximum daily NDMA exposure is 100 nanograms but some samples of Zantac were found to contain more than 3,000 times that amount. The long term, daily doses frequently taken by Zantac users makes these elevated levels of NDMA especially dangerous.

How NDMA gets into Zantac and what factors affect the amount of NDMA present is still being investigated but the link between it and cancer has long been suspected. The companies that make Zantac have even been accused of being aware of the dangerous levels of NDMA in the medication and willfully concealing this information and the risk of cancer in order to keep the highly profitable drug on the market.
