Decrease in South Carolina Traffic Fatalities

According to the most recent statistics released by the State Department of Public Safety, traffic fatalities in South Carolina have seen a slight decrease in the last year. Deaths caused by car accidents are down from 475 fatalities at this time last year to 466 so far this year.

Greenville County is still leading the state in the highest number of fatalities with 37 people killed so far this year. However that is down from 40 lives lost at this time last year.

South Carolina continues to rank among the highest in states for motor vehicle collision fatalities. TRIP, a nonprofit research group, ranked South Carolina sixth among the states for interstate fatalities in 2014. On rural roads, South Carolina has an even more dire track record, ranking only second to Connecticut in accident fatalities.

A highway patrol spokesman said that intoxicated driving and failure to wear a seatbelt are two of the biggest factors in the number of deaths on the roads. He also said speeding and distracted driving cause a lot of injuries to pedestrians and cyclists on the roadways.
