Ban on all cellphone use proposed

Ban on all cellphone use proposed

A total ban on cellphone and portable electronics use while driving was proposed by the National Transportation Safety Board early last week. The ban comes amid the rising numbers of fatal car accidents caused by distracted drivers using their phones.

In a survey conducted by the board, a fifth of all 6000 Americans questioned admitted to having sent emails or text messages while on the road. Most of people surveyed said they did not think they were a danger to other drivers, but believed other drivers on their phones were.

While the NTSB does not have the power to enforce its suggested ban, lawmakers at the state and congressional level, as well as federal regulators, believe its recommendations carry significant weight.
