Attorney Kevin Holmes Awarded IWA Lifetime Achievement Award

The Steinberg Law Firm is pleased to announce Attorney J. Kevin Holmes has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Injured Workers Advocates (IWA), a South Carolina non-profit association of attorneys dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights of South Carolina workers injured by accidental injuries or occupational diseases.

J. Kevin Holmes is one of South Carolina’s most successful appellate lawyers for workers’ rights with a rich career spanning over forty years. Kevin has practiced at the Steinberg Law Firm since 1979 and became a partner in the firm in 1985. In addition to handling appellate case, Kevin has tried hundreds of civil and criminal cases in State and Federal courts in South Carolina.

Early in his career, Kevin won the landmark case Marquard v. Columbia Pacific Mills, which awarded a cotton mill worker’s family compensation after his death from the lung disease of byssinosis attributed to exposure to cotton dust. Kevin argued the family could claim benefits for an accidental injury and, thereby, avoid referral of their claim to the medical panel which had previously denied benefits to injured cotton mill workers. The case broke the lock the medical panel had on claims and expanded the rights of all workers to receive benefits.

That was just one of the cases Kevin has tried and won expanding the rights of injured workers. In one case he saved a high school student left a paraplegic by an accident in his part-time, after school, minimum wage job from a lifetime of poverty by successfully arguing he was entitled to compensation benefits based on his probable future earning as an electrician. He is a familiar face in the courts of South Carolina and a member of the bar of the State of South Carolina, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, the Fourth Circuit Federal Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.

Kevin is recognized by the Million Dollar Advocates, Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, and holds the highest peer review rating from Martindale Hubble. He has served on the Boards of the Charleston County Bar Association and the Board of Governors of the South Carolina Association for Justice. He remains deeply committed to community service and his family, which includes his wife and five children.
