Four people were killed when an Amtrak train struck their car in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
Officials say the accident occurred near the South Carolina-Georgia state line, just before the intersection of South Carolina 46 and U.S. 17. Ted Felder, the Hardeeville interim city manager, said “It appears that the vehicle tried to go around the gate arms… to beat the train across the tracks.”
The Jasper County, South Carolina, coroner has not released the names of the victims.
The vehicle became wedged onto the front of the southbound Amtrak train, which pushed the car about a mile down the track. Felder said the Hardeeville Fire Department received a call shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday. Rescue teams however, were not able to detach the car until about midnight.
Felder said that no one on the train was injured and passengers were taken to the Amtrak station in Savannah, Georgia once the car was removed.
