Looking Back at 2018 | Year in Review
Wow, what a year! Time flies so quickly – it’s hard to believe we are at the close of 2018. Our year has been busy with all the engaging ways we have served our community all year long. Serving our community in all these tangible ways is important to us because of how much it has given to each of us. We want this community to thrive, grow, and provide the necessary resources to coming generations. As we stop to reflect on 2018, here are the ways we helped continue the vibrancy of our South Carolina communities.
Helping the Next Generation
We were honored to award five high school seniors $1,000 scholarships to help with college expenses. We look forward to doing this each year because we know how important continuing education is for the future of our community. If you have a student who will be graduating next year and continuing to college, check here next year to apply to earn this scholarship in 2019!
We served as a drop off site for the Tri County Backpack Drive for the fifth year. This was an amazing time of collecting not only backpacks but other essential school items for girls and boys in our area.
We handle many personal injury cases, and we felt it was important to help prevent injuries from happening in the first place. One way we could do that was by donating over 3,000 helmets and safety lights to elementary school students in College Park Elementary, Goodwin Elementary, and Devon Forest Elementary Schools. We partnered with the school staff and police officers to also teach the students safe bicycling practices.
Helping Across the World
In a hurting world, it is important for us to also help communities outside of our own. That is why we have partnered with Save More Kids through our local International Longshoremen’s Association for many years and will continue to do so. Through this positive relationship, we are helping Liberian mothers feed their children in addition to having access to other resources.
Helping the Hungry
Sadly, there are even people in our own community who go hungry. We have several wonderful organizations who help fill this need, and others, in a variety of ways. We got a chance to give hands-on assistance by spending time in the kitchens of Meals on Wheels in Summerville and Tricounty Family Ministries preparing meals for homebound adults in addition to providing monetary donations through our Steinberg Law Firm Community Foundation.
We also have had the opportunity to partner with Healing Hands Ministry, which has been providing meals, job placement assistance, and many other aids to the community for over 30 years.
Every month we continue to serve with North Palm Ministry and their outreach, Project Manna. Once a month we come together to deliver groceries to a local community where families are in a need of a little assistance to get by.
Helping Those Who Serve Us
We recognize that PTSD is very life-disrupting, and have partnered with The Lowcountry Firefighter and EMS Support Team in a continuing fundraising effort to provide weighted blankets. These blankets can aid in providing restful sleep to those who suffer from PTSD, which is an important part of healing.
Wills are an important protection for families when a loved one dies. It is especially important for Police Officers to have wills in the unfortunate event of their death due to their dangerous place of work. This is why we set up a pro-bono clinic to draft and set up wills for these men and women who bravely serve us.
