How Breast Cancer Affects Everyone- With a Personal Message from a Steinberg Employee

When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, it takes a toll on more than just their bodies. This disease affects the patient and their families, both emotionally and financially.

Sometimes, treatment-related costs can be substantial, including cost of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, as well as home health care and travel to treatment. In most instances, family members need time off work to help take care of their loved ones, resulting in a decrease in income. Patients who were employed may experience loss of productivity or total loss of employment and work-related benefits.  With just a single loved one diagnosed, breast cancer can affect everyone involved fighting the disease.

How Many People are affected by Breast Cancer?

• About 1 in 8 U.S Women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
• It doesn’t affect just women, About 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2016. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.

A Personal Message from a Steinberg Employee Who Lost a Loved One to Breast Cancer:

As we strive to foster more breast cancer awareness throughout the month of October, we also honor those we know who lost a family member to Breast Cancer.

“I always look forward to October and the Race for the Cure. I’m so excited that we have two opportunities to show our support this year. I will have my pink shirt on for the Making Strides Race on October 22nd! I am so thankful that the firm supports this cause so generously, as it is one that hits very close to home for me, as my grandmother and mother-in-law were both diagnosed with breast cancer. I lost my grandmother to the cancer a little over 3 years ago, and it is a devastating and heartbreaking disease. I miss her every day. Luckily, my mother-in-law overcame the disease after a long and difficult struggle, and has been cancer-free for over 6 years! Each year, I wear my pink shirt with pride, and hope that my efforts have saved the life of someone, somewhere. Keep fighting! Please donate! Every little bit helps!”
