The Steinberg Law Firm Supports The Charleston Youth Summit
Kofi Annan, a former Secretary General of the United Nations, once said, “Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society’s margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies.”
The Charleston Youth summit puts our students in the forefront and gives them the opportunity to participate fully in life of our City. The Steinberg Law Firm Foundation is proud to join together with The Royal Baptist Church Foundation, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and The Links, Incorporated to co-sponsor the annual Charleston Youth Summit and college fair to be held in the first Saturday of December.
The students have planned and organized a forum open to students in the 7th through the 12th grades from all areas and backgrounds. A forum where they can express their concerns about the issues important to them: education, social media, race relations, and violence in our community. A day of learning from and sharing with each other wrapped up in a day of entertainment, fun, and prizes. Education is an issue close to the heart of the organizations that have helped sponsor this event.
As Nelson Mandela understood, “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” But we understand that education in the broadest sense of the word is not just teaching our children so they will learn, it is also listening to our children so we can learn from them. We are proud to encourage and support our students’ efforts and to listen to their concerns and ideas to make our community more secure and promising for everyone. We believe education is the keys to our future and remember the words of Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban for simply wanting an education: “With guns you can kill terrorists. With education, you can kill terrorism.”
