Emojis Can Save Lives
Almost every driver on the road these days is a member of some form of social media, whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or one of the many other sites available lately. This means that almost every driver on the road is aware of emojis and their meanings. Emojis are pictures that can be used to communicate, instead of simply using words. While the emojis themselves are simple and sometimes comical, they can be used to convey important messages as well.
Trooper Bob, of South Carolina Highway Patrol, has come up with a billboard that uses social media and emojis to convey the message, “Don’t drink and drive.” He wanted to reach drivers in a laid back way that they could easily understand and relate to. He explained by saying, “I want to be able to talk to you, like we’re sitting at a baseball game eating a hotdog and we’re talking about highway safety.”
He believes that emojis in safety messages could potentially save lives, because they speak a universal language. They’re simple, easy to understand pictures that, when put together, anyone could understand. He even has a twitter account that relays safety messages through emojis in 140 characters or less. While the billboards may look fun and carefree, they convey important messages, and this is Trooper Bob’s whole point. He wants to design billboards that will catch the eye of drivers while relaying safety messages.
Not only would the emoji messages be seen by drivers, but then drivers might mention them to their friends and coworkers. The idea of billboards providing messages through emojis is both new and current. Almost everyone uses emojis when talking to their friends on their phones and/or computers, so why not use them for more important purposes as well?
Trooper Bob’s message to deter people from drinking and driving will soon be seen on over 170 billboards across South Carolina. The simple emoji message is this: beer + car = police car. One of the primary causes of death on South Carolina roads is drunk driving, so these billboards will spread conversation about a topic that’s extremely important. The messages will also be seen wrapped on coolers and even on high school sports tickets. It’s a simple message, presented in a laid back way, that could save your life or the life of a loved one.
