Recipients of 2017 Steinberg Book Scholarship Announced

The Steinberg Law Firm dedicates their efforts to helping Charleston residents and giving back to its community. One of the ways we are able to give back to our community is by promoting the development of literacy, comprehension, and critical thinking for youth through the Steinberg Law Firm Book Scholarship. Recipients of the Steinberg Book Scholarship are awarded financial gifts to cover textbooks for their first semester of college.

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students must be High School seniors planning to attend college and must provide documentation from their school stating their approval for graduation. To apply for the scholarship, students must craft a 350 – 700 word essay using their critical thinking skills.

Their prompt: Propose solutions to resolve a current social issue with limited financial resources.

Students are allowed to write about the economy, health care, discrimination or another topic of their choice.

The winners of the 2017 Book Scholarship were announced in December at the Charleston Youth Summit, where the students were acknowledged for their thoughtful efforts. The Youth Summit is an annual event and was co-sponsored by The Mayor’s Youth Commission (MYC). The MYC was founded in 1999 when Mayor Riley “Felt it was important to learn from youth, what they are feeling and what they are experiencing.”

The event was also supported by other organizations like The Jack and Jill of America, inc. and The Royal Foundation who work in the Charleston community to provide opportunity and education for future generations.
