GM will begin compensation program for crash victims Aug. 1

On Aug. 1, General Motors will begin accepting claims from victims and families of victims involved in accidents caused by defective ignition switches. 

After over a decade of keeping quiet, GM issued a recall on over 2.6 million older small cars to repair the defect. The recall was delayed for so long partly because GM initially saw this defect as a “customer satisfaction” issue more so than a real threat to safety.

The faulty switch has been linked to 13 deaths – 12 in the U.S. and one in Canada. Fortunately for victims and their families, GM will begin the first step of its compensation program on Aug. 1.

The compensation program’s guidelines and other details surrounding it will be announced in the coming weeks once they are finalized. According to GM CEO Mary Barra, the company will “do the right things for those who were harmed” and “everything in our power to make sure this never happens again.”
