Volvo fined for slowly reporting safety defects
Volvo has been issued a $1.5 million fine by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after it failed to report safety defects in a timely manner. Car manufacturers are required by federal law to notify the NHTSA within five business days of a recall.
Between 2010-2012, Volvo issued seven different recall campaigns that affected more than 32,000 vehicles. Defects such as stalling engines, incorrect tire-pressure labeling, and defective airbag deployments prompted the recalls. There were no reports of injuries or accidents.
The automaker has agreed to pay the fine in order to avoid litigation. Volvo asserts that consumer safety is a high priority and that it will work to improve recall procedures.
