Back-to-School Safety During Coronavirus Pandemic
The nationwide back-to-school campaign has been a topic of controversy over the past few months. Some parents are excited to have their children return to a school environment, while others are unsure if it’s the right time to go back. Regardless of how you feel, returning to the classroom is one of the first major public gatherings tests since the COVID-19 Pandemic began.
Precautions in the school environment have been a point of contingency. While a national standard has yet to be established, each school system provides parents with regulations that should be followed to ensure that all students are safe while in the school environment. The majority of schools have required masks, temperature checks, and attempting to increase school properties’ sanitation. While these measures are encouraging, outbreaks of COVID-19 have occurred in individual school districts, causing the entire school to quarantine and find alternate education methods.
Virtual Learning
One of the alternate education methods is virtual learning. Virtual learning entails students connecting with their teachers in online classrooms. Remote learning is not a new phenomenon; this technology has been used by universities across the nation but never at the scale required today. While virtual learning provides a safer environment for students to complete the curriculum, technical difficulties, a lack of experience with remote learning software, and access issues have made it challenging for teachers and students to adapt. Furthermore, many students are struggling with productivity outside of the traditional classroom and school setting.
Quality Masks
There are a couple of ways that you can prepare your student for the return to school. First and foremost, purchasing a good quality mask is essential. An N-95 mask is the highest quality mask and is recommended for those returning to populated school campuses. Purchasing hand sanitizer and wipes for personal use can ensure that your student is disinfecting their hands as often as possible. It’s also important to clean items returned from schools, such as backpacks and books, to ensure that school bacteria are not spread. Talk to your student about the importance of social distancing and washing their hands while at school. A conversation between you and your child can help them realize how their safety affects them and those at home as well.
