We Need to Remember and Thank All of South Carolina’s Healthcare Workers Fighting the Coronavirus, Not Just the Doctors and Nurses

As South Carolina struggles with the growing coronavirus pandemic, we express our deepest gratitude to South Carolina’s doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers treating patients infected with COVID-19 and risking their health in doing so. While doctors and nurses are the healthcare workers people think of first relating to the coronavirus, we must remember that they are one part of a much larger healthcare team. Innumerable food service workers, hospital administrators, laboratory technicians, security guards, engineers, maintenance technicians, janitors and others are working hard and putting their health at risk in each hospital in South Carolina. Without them, the doctors and nurses would not be able to care for their patients. Without them, hospitals would not be able to be thoroughly disinfected. Without them, the mechanical equipment needed to sterilize equipment, pressurize treatment rooms, and heat and cool the hospital would not operate.

We commend Laursen Sausser of Charleston’s Post and Courier newspaper in her article, profiling nineteen of South Carolina’s healthcare workers handling this crisis. In addition to several nurses at Roper and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, the Post and Courier covered an engineer at Charleston’s VA hospital, a pathologist at Prisma Midlands, an environmental services supervisor at Prisma’s Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, and a food service worker at Charleston’s VA hospital. We hope everyone will remember that there are more than just doctors and nurses taking care of us in these scary times. To all the food service workers, engineers, maintenance technicians, janitors, administrators, lab techs, guards and others, we recognize that you too are being exposed to the coronavirus regularly and are putting your health at risk. We appreciate all that you are doing.
